This is the first summer since Shari and I have been in Georgia that I’ve really felt the humidity. We long for the 104 degree temperatures in Tucson, AZ, so dry and nice. 🙂 But we aren't far from higher elevations and cooler temperatures in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The California Art Club Gold Medal Show is coming up soon. My oil painting shown, here on the right, will be shipped to the show which is to start July 17 and run through August 21. This show is being held at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, CA.

Last month we spent a couple of weeks with our son, John and his family in New York City. We had a great visit with them and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We were able to see the Winslow Homer exhibit, "Crosscurrents", and an interesting exhibit on Jacques Louis David, how he prepared for his paintings with thumbnails, pen and ink value sketches and color studies. It was very informative. We spent a couple of days at the Met and only got part way through. It probably takes a week or more to see everything I would want to see thoroughly. Here are some close up images of some paintings we saw. The first section are from the Homer exhibit, then Jacques Louis David, Jean-Baptiste Corot, Edgar Degas, Jean Fragonard (this painting showed great brushwork), Vermeer with the hand and pitcher, a boy eating grapes by Leon-Augustin Lhermitte, a Rubens head, and George Romney shows us how to paint a gloved hand and a cape. I was also able to get some painting done while in New York, to the left is Riverside Church on Manhattan’s upper west side, an 10x8 oil. And on the right, a city scene at the corner of La Salle and Broadway. Also an 8x10 oil.

Learn how to simplify the shape, the value, and the colors of trees and learn how to use values to enhance your trees and brushwork to achieve the texture of the foliage. A photo reference is included.
Learn how to take something complicated, like shrubbery and flowers, and mass it together, looking for the shadow pattern and shapes of the composition to help you work through this type of subject. A photo reference is included.
ARTIST AT A GLANCE
Giovanni Antonio Canal (commonly known as Canaletto) 1697 - 1768
I saw Canaletto’s work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He lived from 1697 to 1768. He painted landscapes and city scenes, mostly in Venice, at a time when most artists were painting large religious or mythological scenes. He is one of the first artists to depict people in their daily lives. He first apprenticed with his father and brother, who were also artists and printmakers as well as set designers.
Much of Canalettto’s early work was done outside, which accounts for his strong observation and accuracy in his values. His use of atmospheric effects and strong local color point towards Impressionism.

I have had a few people ask me if the paintings I post in Facebook and Instagram are available for sale. Some are and some aren't. Some of my plein air and studies that have been posted are available, but some of the plein air pieces are headed to shows, galleries or competitions.

ARTIST TIP
Beware (of the lack) of Depth and Atmosphere in Your Photos
Photographs are notoriously bad in the area of showing depth and atmosphere. It's important to create depth and layers of depth using value, color temperature and saturated and desaturated color. Photos tend to push the subject back and spread it out, so don’t hesitate to zoom into your subject more to get rid of unnecessary space and objects. I’ve attached some paintings, along with photos of the site I where I painted. You can see the flatness of the photo or too much detail in the backgrounds that would ruin the depth in the paintings. One word -- Simplify.
