PHIL STARKE STUDIO NEWSLETTER

December 2019

Shari and I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  We want to thank each of you for being a part of our "art world".  We love sharing and interacting with you and feel blessed each day that we get to be a part of, and participate in the arts.  As this year comes to an end, I was able to get back to Tucson, AZ to teach a pastel workshop for the Tucson Pastel Society.  It was a quick visit, but nice to get in a bit of a visit with artists and friends in the area.

I’m finally out of boxes from our move to Georgia and have time to take a look around and see the landscape here in Georgia. There is a lot of beautiful, rolling farmland, creeks and rivers as well as so many trees (compared to southern Arizona). I will be doing a little tree research to see what kind they are.  There is a lot of new stuff to paint.  I’ve been able to do a little bit of painting but I’ve done more thumbnails and looking around.

ARTIST AT A GLANCE

John (Jack) Frost, 1890 to 1937

John Frost was an American artist who holds a high place in the California school of Impressionism.  He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 14, 1890 and his initial art training came from his famous father, Arthur B. Frost who was known as an illustrator.  Later John Frost traveled to France to study at the Academie Julian under Richard Miller and Jean-Paul Laurens.

For reasons of health, Frost decided to relocate to Pasadena, California in 1918.  In California he became a highly respected artist, his paintings show the influence of his training in French Impressionism.  Inspired by his new surroundings, Frost glorified the California landscape with atmospheric and impressionistic renderings of the Sierra Nevada mountains, sunsets, meadows, the small town of Lone Pine, California, shacks in Palm Springs, the arid California desert with pink verbena flowers and the coastal sand dunes near Carmel.

Frost exhibited and sold his paintings at the Stendahl Gallery that was located at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.  He was a member of the California Art Club, Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles and the Pasadena Society of Fine Arts.  He was awarded the Gold Medal at the Painters and Sculptors in 1924.

His works can be found in the Gardena High School collection, the Irvine Museum collection, Irvine, California and important private collections.  John Frost died at the young age of 47 in Pasadena, California on June 5, 1937.

ARTIST TIP

Color Studies In Different Mediums

It's really beneficial to do some preparations before starting your painting. Just like using thumbnail drawings to set up the composition and shadow pattern it helps to do color studies to figure out large areas of color (not for details and finish). I will sometimes use small oil studies to see how different color combinations would work. Recently I’ve started using different mediums to work out the color. Here are some small pastels where i roughly worked out large areas of color to see how they work together. You don’t need a large number of pastels, I use a set of Nu Pastels which work great for small color sketches, I would want more for a finished pastel painting but for sketching they work great. Remember to keep these images small and simple.

Merry Christmas, Shari and Phil! I hope you enjoy Georgia as much as we did when we were there. We lived in Georgia nearly 10 years ( two in Marietta and eight in Statesboro), and learned to love the people and the topography — just a delightful place. Best wishes for a joyous and successful 2020.
